Last Friday, UCO lost an important member of its community. Geri Renae Anadazola, known as Renae, passed away on April 10. She had just turned 67.
Renae was a head cashier at 1890 and the Nigh Food Court, where she spent her time ensuring students were served and felt cared for. She brightened anyone’s day. Renae’s kindness toward students will not soon be forgotten.
Her coworker of two years, Coco Peteet, said that “she looked at everybody as her kids here.” Another coworker, Joelene Lou, said the energy she brought to the community was like that of a “sweet grandma.” Both Coco and Joelene said she was always a happy person. Her manager, Tracy Coburn, who first hired her, called her a caring person. “She tried to make sure that everyone was taken care of, and they had the best experience wherever she was, which said a lot about her character.”
UCO Student and Independent View reporter Jessy Kollie was one of many who grew close to Renae during her time here. When the two spoke at the register, Renae always made it a point to check in on him. He recalled an encounter in which she told him, “I see everyone here as my family and I always try to give you guys as much love as I can.”
Another student, Payten Kuns, said, “She would always compliment my outfits. She even had favorites. Every time I saw her, I felt motivated to keep being myself, even when I stood out. I talked to her a few weeks ago about what her next tattoo would be, and she seemed so excited. She helped make my day just that much better, and she will be deeply missed.”
I too have felt affected by her. Last semester I routinely ate breakfast at 1890. Renae chit-chatted with me, as she always did, then brought my food and utensils to my table so I wouldn’t have to get up. I told her I could do it, but she did it for me with a smile every time I was there.
Renae consistently maintained a positive attitude and caring nature as she served UCO. Such positivity and care in the lives of college students are rare. She was a source of comfort to a community that often needs it.
She will be remembered by her daughter Brandi and the UCO community. There will be a memorial service held for Renae April 25, 11 a.m. to 2 p.m., in room 304 of the Nigh Center.
