At the University of Central Oklahoma, different events happen every week from club events, concerts, sports matchups, to student-led initiatives. But when asked, three students say they do not hear about the events happening on campus.
“I didn’t even realize there was a blood drive going on,” UCO student Jacoby Francis said.
“We have events on campus, but they’re not really advertised as aggressively as they should be,” echoed another student, Shemani Scaffe.
The issue isn’t a lack of interest. It’s a lack of information. From student organization efforts to fine arts performances and athletic results, many parts of campus life go underreported.
“Events relevant to campus, sports events like wins and losses, stuff like that,” said Connor Stephens. “I feel like a lot of things student organizations do go under the radar.”
From those conversations, one thing stood out. It’s not that students don’t care about campus events; they just don’t always hear about them.
A student-run publication only works if it’s connected to the people it’s about, and The Independent View is no different. Its mission is to bring light to stories that might otherwise go untold, the ones that matter to students, but slip under the radar.
Students who have ideas for coverage or stories they think deserve more attention can contact The Independent View directly. The newsroom is run by students, for students.
